Zapata County Independent School Districts' subpopulation students were served by the Federal Programs Department by providing each student with a hygiene backpack kit, tennis, socks and undergarments to ensure that they have adequate personal care items to assist them in focusing on their academics and not on their basic needs during summer school. The backpacks were filled with hygiene items that were appropriate for their gender and their age and their tennis, socks and undergarments were specifically chosen for the students' needs.  The following staff members assisted in assembling the backpacks, the tennis, socks and undergarments and distributing and delivering the items: Gloria Vela, District Family & Community Engagement (FACE) Liaison; Sonia Montes, ZNES ARO/FACE Liaison & Lead; Reyna Yanez, ZSES ARO/FACE Liaison; Zahra Galvan, ZMS ARO/FACE Liaison; Kristina Vela, ZHS ARO/FACE Liaison; Aileen Campos, FARVES ARO/FACE Liaison & Gilberto Salinas, Administrative Assistant to the Director of Federal Programs. Los estudiantes de la subpoblación del Distrito Escolares Independiente del Condado de Zapata fueron atendidos por el Departamento de Programas Federales al proporcionar a cada estudiante un equipo de mochila de higiene, tenis, calcetines y ropa interior para garantizar que cada estudiante tengan artículos de cuidado personal adecuados para ayudarlos a concentrarse en sus estudios y no en sus necesidades básicas durante la escuela de verano. Las mochilas se llenaron con artículos de higiene apropiados para su género y su edad y sus tenis, calcetines y ropa interior fueron elegidos específicamente para las necesidades de los estudiantes. Many people are familiar with the Toys for Tots (TFT) from the Marine Corps for Christmas toys, but few know that the Marine Corps also runs a Toys for Tots (TFT) Foundation Literacy Program.  This year Mrs. Suzette M. Barrera, Director of Federal Programs, sought to bring the Literacy Program to the children that participated in the ZCISD Summer School Program.  She requested that the Literacy Program give the students of Zapata the opportunity to choose their own books.  Students had an opportunity to choose among more than 1,000 books. The Federal Programs Department will continue distributing books to underprivileged children during special events. There was no cost to our District due to the significant generosity of the American public. Assisting in this effort was the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (or NAESPA, where ESEA is the Elementary and Secondary Education Act). It was a great surprise when the pallets of books were delivered because although Mrs. Barrera had applied to be considered one of the Districts that would be allotted books in early March, she was never notified that the ZCISD Federal Programs Department had been chosen.  We are indeed thankful to the Marine Corps for putting this initiative together.  Since the Federal Programs Department have many initiatives going on Mrs. Reyna Yanez, Mrs. Sonia Montes & Mr. Gilberto Salinas assisted in organizing the books. While Miss Gloria Vela, Ms. Aileen Campos, Ms. Zahra Galvan and Ms. Kristina Vela assisted with another initiative.  For questions, call Suzette M.
