Zapata High School Dinning/Decor Committee

On Wednesday February 6, 2019, the Dining/Decor Committee at Zapata High School met for the first time to discuss the upgrade and improvements that will be made at the ZHS Cafeteria. Committee members looking at the design and improvements include; Olinda Flores, Lesvia Cuellar, Connie Gray, Gerardo Garcia, and Rogelio Gonzalez. Also as part of the Committee, are students from the Healthy South Texas Youth Ambassadors. Members discussed the increase of seating, nutrition promotion, seating designs, and colors that are inviting and comfortable for students during their lunch time. The student input in this project is very important for the best possible design.

Taste Testing at Zapata High School

The ZCISD Child Nutrition Department hosted a taste testing event on Monday January 28 at the Zapata High School Cafeteria. High School Students taste tested lunch and breakfast items. Breakfast included the Breakfast Combo Bowl; consisting of Eggs, Beans, Bacon, and Hash Brown. Lunch items included an Italian Menu of Chicken Alfredo Pasta, and a new Cheese Pizza. The students enjoyed testing the new items and were able to give the department feedback on them. The new items will be included for the March or April Menu. We would like to thank the Healthy Youth Ambassadors and Texas A&M AgriLife extension for helping with the taste testing event.

Harvest at Zapata North Elementary

Zapata North Elementary has been working hard at growing a productive garden. Between the months of December and January, 2nd grade students at north elementary have harvested 15 lbs of Kale, 15 lbs of Butter Lettuce, and 8 lbs of Carrots. The campus grown produce was donated to the ZCISD Child Nutrition Department, where it was used to prepare and serve garden and taco salads. The campus grown gardens are part of the Learn, Grow, Eat, & Go! Program. We would like to thank Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for all their help and guidance with this program. Students at Zapata North appreciate seeing their hard work being put to good use at their campus.

8th grade students visit the East Foundation ranch land.

The East Foundation supports wildlife conservation and other public benefits of ranching and private land stewardship. Our charitable activities are operated as an integrated program of research, education and outreach in pursuit of our mission of supporting wildlife conservation on native rangelands.

The platform for our research and education efforts includes over 218,000 acres of native South Texas rangeland, operated as six separate ranches in parts of Jim Hogg, Starr, Willacy and Kenedy Counties.
